An Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) with the Gandevi chief court in Navsari district was caught red-handed accepting Rs 25,000 as bribe from a complainant. According to Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials, the bribe was sought for getting the complainants cheque of Rs 10 lakh from the court.
According to ACB officials,Paresh Naik,a resident of Navsari, had purchased nine acres of land near Ambheta village in Gandevi two years ago. He had paid Rs 72 lakh to one Nazir Mulla, who had used fake land documents and forged signatures of the owners who were staying in South Africa.
When Paresh learnt he was cheated,he demanded his money back. Mulla gave him Rs 35 lakh back and asked for more time to pay back the remaining amount. Later, however,Mulla failed to pay up. On September 11,2011,Paresh committed suicide in Navsari.
Pareshs brother-in-law,Prashant Desai, lodged a complaint of cheating against Mulla and nine others on December 30,2011. Navsari police arrested 10 persons, including Nazir Mulla. The accused agreed to pay Rs 10 lakh to the wife of the deceased after a settlement. Mulla and others got bail in 2012 and they deposited the amount of Rs 10 lakh with the court.
Pareshs wife and his brother-in-law contacted APP T L Gangude in Gandevi court to get the amount from court. The APP demanded a bribe for helping them get the cheque from the court. Prashant, meanwhile, contacted Anti Corruption Bureau office and lodged a complaint against Gangude on Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon,as soon as Prashant handed the bribe amount of Rs 25,000 to Gangude,ACB officials caught him with the bribe amount.
