Professor Zala is new Bhavnagar University V-C

Prof Zala is presently head of the chemistry department at MG Science Institute in Ahmedabad.

Professor Shailesh Zala, who is presently teaching chemistry at MG Science Institute, Ahmedabad and who is incumbent national vice president of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), has been appointed new vice-chancellor of Bhavnagar University (BU). The state government cleared Prof Zala’s name late on Thursday evening and the new V-C is likely to assume charge on Monday. Prof Zala will replace Prof HN Vaghela who was holding the charge of V-C of the BU since October 2014 when DR Korat’s term as V-C ended.

Prof Zala is presently head of the chemistry department at MG Science Institute in Ahmedabad and holds a doctorate in organic chemistry. He had completed his doctoral research in year 2005, also from BU. He is an alumnus of Ahmedabad Science College and has also served on various committees and bodies of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad He also holds a degree in law. A native of Ahmedabad, the 51-year professor has been teaching chemistry since 1988 and has remained active in student politics. Presently, he is national V-P of ABVP, the students arm of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was president of Gujarat state unit of BJP from 2008 to 2013.

“I am active in student politics for welfare of students,” Prof Zala told The Indian Express on Friday. Prof Zala’s name was cleared ahead of Mahipatsinh Chavda, principal of AL Arts College, Ahmedabad and the in-charge VC Prof Vaghela, both of whom were in the shortlist of three names submitted to governor by a search panel. The search panel was appointed in early this year and it was headed by Prof Indra Prasad Tripathi, pro-vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidyalay in Madhya Pradesh. The panel had submitted the final three names to Gujarat governor Om Prakash Kohli on August 7, when it met for the last time.
