As many as 12 students of a primary school in Dhadoi village in Valsad district were affected by food poisoning on Saturday evening. The students were given Muthiya (Gujarati snacks) as part of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. They started vomiting and showed signs of dysentery soon after returning home.

The students were immediately rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in Valsad district. Eleven students were declared out of danger on Monday, but one Sajna (7) is reportedly in a critical condition.

The parents of the students went to the school on Monday morning and informed supervisor Surbhi Mehta about the incident.

Valsad district Primary Education Officer,Vanyagiri Gosai, said: “We have come to know about the incident. After speaking to the school authorities,we found that the Mid-Day Meal contract was given to an NGO named Stri Shakti of Valsad and they had given muthiya to the students on Saturday. We have collected samples of the muthiya from the NGO and have sent them for lab-analysis. We are awaiting the report and will take action later.”

Sources in the village said this was not the first incident of food poisoning in the village. A year ago,a similar incident had occurred where six students including Sajna were affected by food-poisoning.

After getting assurance from the school supervisors, the parents agreed to send their children to the school.
