President of the BJP-ruled Talala municipality, Kanchan Sondarva, was disqualified as councillor and lost her position as chief of the municipality on Thursday after she was found guilty of misusing power in awarding contracts and hiring staff.
Ajay Kumar, district collector of Gir Somnath, on Wednesday issued an order stating Sondarva was being declared disqualified as councillor and for positions she held by virtue of being a councillor. The order was sent to Talala municipality on Thursday.
The collector further said that Sondarva was found guilty of misusing her power and position as an elected member of the municipality in awarding contracts to such entities in which she had a direct interest. Kumar acted following a directive from the Gujarat High Court in this regard.
Four fellow BJP councillors had complained to the collector some months ago about Sondarva’s alleged misuse of her position. They claimed Sondarva had awarded a contract of around Rs2 lakh for building five toilet blocks in Talala town to Bhagyalakshmi Majoor Sahakari Mandali, a cooperative body run by her husband Nathabhai.
Not only this, she also got her son Suresh recruited as peon in a school run by the Municipality. After the collector did not take action for months, the complainants moved the court.
