A day after Shailesh Shah, one of the accused in the Chaani gangrape case, was found dead, the police now suspect foul play in the case.
While the family members of Shailesh said that a few days ago he had objected to regular gathering of men at the house of Naina Gandhi,a co-accused in the case, the Chaani police have raised a question mark against her character.
Harish Shah, uncle of the deceased, said: We do not know if he was involved or not (in the alleged gangrape). But a few days ago, when odd persons used to hang around near Naina Gandhis house,he raised a voice, which led to a riot. Shailesh worked as a driver at a Ranoli-based factory.
Police officials said that the woman who complained of the gangrape knew the accused. They are all from the same neighbourhood doing odd jobs in Ranoli, said Inspector H J Thakore, adding,We are yet to find out the role of Naina Gandhi (in the alleged crime),but it seems she had a dubious reputation of having several men at her house.

According to the police,Shailesh committed suicide by swallowing rat poison mixed in cold drink on Thursday. He had left a suicide note in which he said that he was taking the extreme step as he could not show his face to his parents after being named in the rape complaint. Interestingly,at Kothari Faliya, neighbours of Naina say that apart from violence nothing untoward had happened there. We would have known if a woman was raped here, said one of the neighbours.
The Detection of Crime Branch, which is now investigating the case, said that of the six accused, four have been arrested. We are yet to arrest Ranjit, while others apart from Shailesh have been arrested, said DCB Inspector J R Ramgadhiya.
