Eight college students, including six girls, were arrested under the Prohibition Act for consuming liquor at a flat in the posh Bodakdev locality of Ahmedabad on Sunday morning. The house belongs to an IPS officer who had given it on rent to a mother-daughter duo about a month ago.

According to the Vastrapur police, which raided the flat in the Nebula tower opposite Grand Bhagwati Hotel, there were eight drunk youths in the house. Police said they were students of reputed design and engineering colleges in Gandhinagar and Surat, and had gathered at the flat on Saturday night to celebrate Friendship Day.

Police said that on Saturday evening,a neighbour had given an application to the Vastrapur police alleging the tenants were involved in “suspicious activities”.

“We didn’t find anything suspicious except two empty bottles of liquor. The students were found under the influence of liquor,so we arrested them under the Prohibition Act,” said police inspector Manoj Sharma, adding that they are residents of Ahmedabad and Surat.

The house belongs to Deputy Inspector General Vikas Sahay, who is posted at the Raksha Shakti University. When contacted,he said the flat was rented out to a mother-daughter duo a month ago.

“I had received a complaint from a member of the society that the girl lives alone, which is not acceptable. The society has a rule not to rent out flats to singles. I checked this through my broker and served a notice a couple of days back to the tenets to vacate the house within a week. I have no idea what all was happening there,” Sahay said.
