Two days after a 16-year-old minor was allegedly gang-raped in the outskirts of Vadodara city on October 4, the Detection of Crime Branch on Monday nabbed the three accused and handed them over to the Vadodara rural police who are investigating the case.
The Crime Branch also nabbed two other accused who had allegedly also arrived on a motorcycle and “abused” the victims before leaving the spot.
Addressing mediapersons on Monday, Commissioner of Police, Vadodara city, Narsimha Komar said that various teams of the city and rural police had put in a “coordinated effort” that resulted in the breakthrough.
Komar said that the accused, who are natives of Uttar Pradesh and residents of Vadodara city, had covered a total distance of 48 kilometres on the night they allegedly brutalised the 16-year-old and assaulted her minor friend, with whom she had gone to the spot where the crime took place.
He said, “Various teams of officers from the Vadodara city police as well as the the rural police were on the field, collecting clues and analysing technical data… Based on the description of the accused given by the victims and a mobile phone of the victim that was taken by the accused, we were able to crack the case.”
A call received on the victim’s mobile phone, as well as its overall call detail records, helped the police track the accused. “We conducted a technical investigation of the mobile locations and also scanned footage of over 1000 CCTV cameras of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation as well as private establishments from the route taken by the accused… . the distance from the residence of the accused to the crime spot was only 3.5 kilometres, but they had a lot of movement that night,” Komar added.
“We also used technology to get enhanced photos of the accused and match the suspects who were nabbed. The registration number of the two-wheelers of the accused also helped in getting to them… They are migrants from Uttar Pradesh,” he noted.
An FIR has been lodged by Vadodara rural police under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita Sections 70(2) (gangrape of minor), 309(4) (robbery], 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 65(1) (punishment for rape of woman under 16 years of age) and 54 (abettor present when an offence is committed), as well as sections of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO Act).
