A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday seeking stay on the local body polls on the grounds of gross mismanagement and regularities by the State Election Commission (SEC).
The PIL, filed by Gujarat Nagrik Sangathan, is likely to be heard on Thursday by the vacation bench of Justice A G Uraizee. The petitioner claimed that voters are kept the dark about the background of candidates since affidavits filed along with the nomination papers have not been uploaded on the SEC’s website.
During a brief hearing, petitioner’s advocate K R Koshti told the court that affidavits, past and present, containing information about the candidates, their income, education, criminal record among others haven’t been uploaded. The petitioner also alleged several regularities in manner in which some candidates have withdrawn their nominations because of which a dozens of candidates were declared winner uncontested. The petitioner alleged “horse trading” by the political parties and prayed for an inquiry.
