A PIL has been filed in the Gujarat High Court challenging the appointment of Jagruti Pandya, wife of slain BJP leader Haren Pandya, as a chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) earlier this year. The HC Wednesday sought government’s response, without issuing any notice, and posted the matter for hearing on May 4.

The division bench, led by chief justice R Subhash Reddy, asked the government pleader “to seek instruction from the state government” on the petition. The petition has been moved by one Chandravadan Rangildas Dhruv, who appeared in the court as a party-in-person. He alleged in the plea that Pandya shouldn’t have been appointed as chairperson as she is a “political person” who had contested elections in the past. “Pandya is associated with the BJP. There is no provision of appointment of political personalities on such an important post and therefore the appointment of Jagruti Pandya….be cancelled with immediate effect,” the petitioner said.
