State-owned power distribution firm, Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL), suspended its five junior engineers and six electric assistants on Thursday after photographs purportedly showing them consuming liquor in a Diu hotel were published by a local daily in Amreli.
PGVCL MD H R Suthar issued orders late on Thursday evening, suspending the five officers and six staffers with immediate effect.
“According to reports published in a local daily in Amreli, PGVCL officers had gone for vigilance activity in the jurisdiction of Una division office. Afterward, some staff members had gone to Diu in the official vehicle of the company and consumed liquor in a hotel in Diu while still in uniform of the company…. With reference to this, PGVCL MD H R Suthar has taken prompt and strict action against staff involved after he came to know of the incident… Taking the matter seriously, all the 11 staff members involved in the incident have been suspended with immediate effect,” an official release from the PGVCL said.
The incident reported in the daily took place early this week when the officers and staff were conducting a checking drive in areas near Una in Gir Somnath district.
The five junior engineers have been identified as N R Talsaniya of Amreli division-I, BB Patel of Chital sub-division in Amreli, N M Bhavani of Amreli rural sub-division, H J Patel of Damnagar sub-division in Amreli and N B Goswami of Amreli city sub-division. The six electric assistants were identified as MP Damodara of Chital sub-division, D V Upadhyay of Amreli rural sub-division, K D Vikani of Damnagar sub-division, D D Adroja of Amreli rural sub-division, R B Amreliya of Amreli town sub-division and J N Pathar of Amreli town sub-division. Along with their suspension, PGVCL has also changed their headquarters.
Incidentally, liquor consumption is prohibited in Gujarat. But there is no such policy in Diu, the Union Territory off Una coast of Gujarat.
