Pravinsinh Chauhan, the son of Panchmahal BJP MP Prabhatsinh Chauhan, joined Congress Wednesday at a sneh milan event of Opposition leader Shankersinh Vaghela in Godhara. Pravinsinh, who unsuccessfully contested the 2012 Assembly polls from Godhra on a BJP ticket, said that “disillusionment” in the party forced him to change sides.
At a well-attended sneh milan event, Pravinsinh donned the party sash in the presence of president of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee Bharat Solanki.
BJP leaders said Pravinsinh’s defection “makes no difference” as the father and the son did not get along and Pravinsinh felt he could not “emerge out of his father’s shadow”. However, a senior member of the BJP state executive said, “Pravinsinh is someone who knows a lot about the party’s strategies and has been an insider. His defection to Congress and his sour relationship with his father could hurt the party to an extent. He has quite a few followers in the party and enjoys popularity among the people, especially in the rural parts of the district.”
Pravinsinh, who had lost the 2012 Assembly polls to Congress’s C K Raulji by 2,868 votes, told The Indian Express, “I worked for BJP for nearly 20 years, but was never given a big responsibility or post. I have joined Congress to work for the people.”
Hinting that Pravinsinh could be a resource to Congress in Godhra, Raulji said, “Pravinsinh is an experienced leader and he knows BJP from inside. His experience will be useful for the party in coming election.” When contacted, Prabhatsinh refused to comment on the development.
