A man convicted to 14 years Rigorous imprisonment (RI) on charges of spying for Pakistans espionage agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI),attempted to kill himself using a razor blade in Vadodara Central Jails High Security Zone on Monday afternoon.
Majid alias Anwar Raja alias M A Paniwala alias Aslam Abdulkarim had slashed himself all over his body.
Raopura Sub-Inspector K I Kotar said the incident occurred around 5 pm at Ward 2 and 3 of the jails High Security Zone. He had hidden a shaving blade and used it to slash his left wrist,abdomen,chest and groin. It was after jail authorities noticed a pool of blood that they took him to the jail dispensary and later to the SSG Hospital, Kotar said.
Paniwala was sentenced to 14 years RI after being found guilty under the Official Secrets Act,on February 28,2007. He was reportedly arrested from a cyber café in Jamnagar and the police had reportedly recovered maps of defence establishments in Jamnagar,passports under various names,and SIM cards from him.
Additional Sessions Judge S K Pandey had acquitted three others Fakir Adam Hussain,Usman Ghani and Mohammad Siddique,arrested in connection with the case,on benefit of doubt.
Police officers from Jamnagar said on condition of anonymity that Paniwala was born in Jamnagar. He had studied in a madrassa in the town and had started his own garment business in New Delhi,Mumbai and Hyderabad. The police claim to have reportedly found that he was receiving funds from Pakistan.
