Contract labourers of the ONGC in Gujarat have gone on a hunger strike at the Avni Bhavan near Sabarmati from Septmeber 2 in a bid to demand proper salaries, provident fund, gratuity and the like. They have also pledged to continue it till Feb 6
Santosh Bhendwal,General Secretary of the Gujarat Petroleum Employees Union, said: The workers have been hardly getting Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,000 per month. We had demonstrated to get the demands materialised since December, and to date,it is on. But nothing has happened and so we have gone on a hunger strike now.
According to the union members, the government was going to announce a package to meet the demands of the workers, but it was never given to them. The union had even given applications to the court, but even after repeated efforts,no decision has been ruled out in their favour.
The workers are reportedly adamant to continue the strike after February 6 if their demands are not met.
