THE OIL and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) on Monday issued a clarification on Monday, saying that the 25 persons onboard a boat that capsized near Asara village were “not its employees” and that the ONGC did not operate the boat.

The incident happened on Saturday when a boat carrying over 25 people from Asarsa village in Jambusar taluka was at sea conducting an oil survey. The boat capsized due to the high (strong) tide.

Those on board shouted for help and managed to reach the shore, except the boat rider Naresh Rathod (still missing) and 45-year-old boat owner Rohit Makwana, who drowned.

Jambusar police reached the spot and sent Makwana’s mortal remains to Bharuch Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. Jambusar police started a probe after registering an accidental death case.

Talking to The Indian Express, Jambusar police station police inspector V K Budhiya said, “The actual number of people onboard the boat is not yet known, but people said there were over 25 people. We are putting in efforts to search for Naresh Rathod, who was driving the boat.”

He further added, “The boat was on its way from the sea coast of Asarsa village in Jambusar taluka to Gandher–Muller village in Vagra taluka, also in Bharuch district. The ASEL was surveying seismic data for the possibility of oil in seawater. We are conducting further investigations to determine whether the survey team was negligent. Saturday was the first day of their survey.”

On Sunday, Makwana’s funeral procession was carried out. A large number of people participated, including family members and relatives of Rathod.
