One fisherman died in a mid-sea collision between a fishing boat and an unidentified vessel off the Jafarabad coast in Amreli district on Wednesday night. Seven persons have been rescued who had fallen into the seawater following the collision.

According to sources, the fishing boat was completely destroyed while the unidentified vessel disappeared under the cover of darkness.

The owner of the fishing boat has lodged a complaint in this regard against the captain of an unknown vessel, said sources at Jafarabad police station.

The deceased fisherman has been identified as Ram Karsan Bambhaniya (60),a resident of Jafarabad port.

Police have registered the complaint under Section 280 (accident involving non-surface vehicle) and 304 (A) (causing death unintentionally) of the Indian Penal Code.

M N Trivedi, the police inspector and investigation officer, said that following the collision, the vessel Kamdhenu (registered with Jafarabad port) capsized in the sea. He said the collision occurred at around 10 nautical miles off Jafarabad coast.

According to Trivedi,a search operation has been carried out in the Arabian Sea to nab the vessel that had disappeared after the collision.

“We have informed all port officers from Mumbai to Jakhau port and asked them to scan the data of all the vessels passing through the Indian waters. We have asked them to note their exact location at the time of the collision,” he said.

Trivedi further said that each vessel is fitted with the global positioning system and it helps in finding out the location of the vessel at any particular time.
