Many girls in Gujarat participating in the Navratri festival have got their backs and arms tattooed with the ‘Save girl child’ message.

Girls from the textile and diamond city of Surat city have taken a lead in conveying this message. The message tattooed on the backs of these girls reads “Beti bachao, betose badhkar betiia” (Save girl child, girls better than boys ).

An activist propagating the idea said: “They have utilised the festival to convey this message effectively to the people removing their conception that girl child is burden to family.”

The backs are designed with pictures of Radha and Krishna playing Raas. Besides, traditional designs are also in demand.

Incidentally, beauty parlours located in various parts of the state have done good business by painting tattoos.
