Pointing out several lacunae in Gujarats model of development,Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday said passion for growth needs to be combined with compassion for the poor. India can never be a truly happy and prosperous country embracing all its 1.3 billion people unless our passion for growth is combined with compassion for the poor. There are a large number of people in our country who are still poor, Chidambaram said while addressing an event held by a media house.
The Finance Minister suggested that Gujarat, with over 100 lakh people living below the poverty line, needs to address the problems plaguing its social sector.
Picking holes in the Gujarat model while comparing it with Maharashtra,Chidambaram said,I know there are alternate narratives in politics. That is how politics should be. If one narrative is espoused by one leader, the other leader should present a compelling and alternate narrative. People must have a choice between one narrative and the another narrative.
Commenting on the 2014 Lok Sabha elections,Chidambaram said,Our government is industry-friendly and when we return in 2014,we will be more friendly. He also pointed out the Cabinet committee on investments had already cleared projects worth Rs 1.6 lakh crore. He also asked the industry leaders not to wait for the outcome of the elections to start investing.
