A joint team of the Gujarat Forest Department and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), satellite-tagged a male whale shark off the Veraval coast in Gir Somnath district on Thursday as part of an ongoing research project to understand migration and ecology of these marine mammals.

Forest officers said that the male whale shark got entangled in a fishing net around 12 nautical miles off Veraval on Thursday.

After being alerted about it, a joint team of the Forest Department and the WTI went to the area and deployed a satellite transmitter on the first dorsal fin of the shark.

“To understand biological preferences and study the movement patterns of whale sharks traversing off Gujarat waters, Department of Forests, Government of Gujarat, and Wildlife Trust of India join hands to conduct satellite telemetry studies of five whale sharks from Gujarat waters as a part of collaborative conservation actions that are being undertaken through mutually agreed MoU under the Whale Shark conservation project in Gujarat,” a release said.
