Activists of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) vandalised the Gujarat Law Society hostel on Wednesday as a mark of protest against the alleged ragging of a first-year BBA student.
The activists also shouted slogans against the hostel authorities and pelted stones at the Mahavir Jain Vidyala (hostel) in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad.
According to the police,Pankil Shah,a student, had lodged a complaint on Tuesday that four students of L D Engineering College, staying in the same hostel, had ill treated and beaten him. They were allegedly forcing Shah to serve them food, water and other things at their rooms.
NSUI leader Indravijaysingh Gohil said they resorted to vandalism after the hostel authorities refused to speak to Shahs parents. Shah had come to stay in the hostel a few months ago. Four of the hostel residents had been harassing him. Ragging and harassment are unethical, but the hostel authorities always ignore such incidents, Gohil said.
Nirav Baxi,NSUI president (Ahmedabad west),said the boys father had come from Surendrangar to sort out the issue, but the college refused to discuss the issue and dismissed it stating it was a personal rivalry among the students.
Baxi added: The boys kept on ordering him to bring things to their rooms and when he refused to oblige, they attacked him outside the mess. Shah was abused and his nails were plucked out. We went to talk to the hostel authorities, but they misbehaved with Shahs parents.
Ellisbridge Inspector J B Gadhvi said the hostel reported of some damage of furniture, but no major injuries were reported. We have deployed some policemen at the premises, he said, adding that Shah has given an application to the L D Engineering College.
The authorities have closed down the hostel for a few days.
Hostel Rector Harshad Mehta could not be contacted despite several attempts .
