An NRI family from London has reportedly lost valuables worth over Rs 1 crore after burglars broke into their house in Daman stealing gold jewellery and £8000 in cash. The incident occurred early on February 27 while the house owners, Ishwar Tandel and his wife, were on a Mahakumbh pilgrimage in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the Daman police, the burglars broke open the main door of Tandel’s house in Moti Daman around 2 am.

Tandel, who had been staying in London with his family, returned to his hometown in December to attend a relative’s wedding.
Neighbours informed the police that after the marriage, Tandel and his wife Nitaben travelled to Prayagraj for the Kumbh Mela, leaving their daughter Trupti and her husband Jay at home.
“At the time of the theft, Trupti and her husband were at Mumbai airport for some errands. A neighbour, who heard the noise of the door lock being broken, alerted Tripti. The couple rushed back to Daman on Friday morning and found gold jewellery weighing 1,400 grams and cash worth 8,000 pounds missing,” said an officer.

The police also said that cash to the tune of Rs 25,000 was stolen from the offering box at a nearby temple on the same day.
The police are awaiting the arrival of Ishwar Tandel and his wife, who had left Prayagraj on Friday afternoon. They said that the exact amount of the stolen items can be confirmed only after taking the statements from the NRI couple. The police suspect that someone known to the Tandel family could be involved in the burglary.
The police at Moti Daman station have registered a case of theft.
