Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil was today suspended from the state Assembly for the entire Budget Session after he refused to tender an apology over his remarks on the alleged nexus between the Narendra Modi government and the Adani group.

This comes a day after 19 Congress MLAs moved a no-confidence motion against the Speaker after he sought an apology from Gohil over the issue.

After the Question Hour today,Minister of State (Law and Parliamentary Affairs) Pradipsinh Jadeja moved a motion against Gohil on the grounds that the Congress leader did not tender an apology as per the Speaker’s order of Wednesday. State Forests & Environment Minister Mangubhai Patel supported the motion, following which Speaker Ganpat Vasava moved it for voice vote and it was passed with majority.

The Opposition will now be led by Deputy Leader of Opposition Mohansinh Rathwa in the current session, which will continue till March 30.

Speaking to the media after his suspension,Gohil said,“I tried to raise my voice against those who are looting Gujarat. I am ready not only to get suspended but to sacrifice myself for Gujarat. Modi and Adani have looted the state. Adani is selling land given to him for Re 1 for Rs 15,000 (per sq mt),and Modi is traveling in Adani’s luxury plane.”

He said the “rules, precedents and decisions” of formers Speakers were very clear that “no member can be forced” to tender apology in the House. “But here the Speaker is acting as the remote control of the CM,so I do not expect any justice from him,” said the Congress MLA,adding that Congress members had insisted to boycott the proceedings,“but I have ordered and requested them to stay in the House and expose this corrupt government”.

Attacking Vasava,Gohil said,“I had categorically said that the Speaker,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dileepbhai Sanghani and our senior member Arjunbhai (Modhwadia) can jointly check the records (of Assembly proceedings). But the Speaker did not do that on the CM’s instructions and agreed to suspend me.”

At the heart of the controversy is Opposition’s allegations that the government has given land to Adani group in Kutch at throwaway prices and that many BJP leaders are partner in the company. These charges had created an uproar in the Assembly on Wednesday, following which the House was adjourned on four occasions.
