While introducing Ambassador of France to India Francois Richier and sharing his views on student exchange programmes between the two countries,Director of National Institute of Design Pradyumna Vyas said that thanks to information technology one does not need to visit a country or a place as online research in design is possible from one’s own place. The Ambassador took no time in expressing his disagreement. He started his address by stating that he did not believe in remote research work as it lacks the feel of the place. Going abroad is very important in design studies and at the end of the day it is about an exchange of ideas and design with better understanding rather merely aping others, the Ambassador added.

Garba family

The Ranas of Karelibaug in Vadodara have been lucky. They have been winning awards at garba events back to back since 2006; they have collected four two wheelers in all as garba prizes and on Sunday they won a car! The eldest son of the family,Nischay,29,won a Hyundai Eon in a lucky draw for his participation in a garba. His sister Keyuri,26,and mother Bharati,48,have earlier won two-wheelers for their garba performances. Bharati claims that even as a teenager she used to win garba competitions. Nischay who does theatre,Gujarati films and television, says that they begin preparations three months in advance — right from planning costumes to dance moves. Nishchay’s father Bharatbhai Rana,52,runs a sweetmeat store in Raopura. Bharatiben, who has been a homemaker all her life,is also a chania choli designer.

Confidence building measure

In order to boost the confidence of policemen, the Vadodara police commissionerate in association with Society for Creation of Opportunity through Proficiency in English — established in 2007 by the state government — is conducting seminar-workshops for officers to enable them to become proficient in spoken English. The commissionerate has to pay a course fee for the 90-hour seminar that will involve use of audio-video aids for instructions. The police commissionerate is looking forward to corporate sponsorships in order to increase the reach of the programme.
