Even as the Gujarat High Court (HC) directed the state government to fill the vacant posts of Protection Officers under the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, the post is lying vacant in eight districts.
The state government announced the vacant positions in the state Assembly while replying to a query in this regard by Congress MLA from Viramgam, Tejashree Patel. Patel had asked if in which districts the post of Protection Officer was sanctioned and in which of them the post was lying vacant.
Replying to this, State Minister Vasu Trivedi had said that the post was sanctioned in 26 districts of the state and in eight of them the post was lying vacant. These districts include Vadodara, Narmada, Navsari, Dang-Ahwa, Dahod, Kheda, Mehsana and Kutch.
The minister also said that the posts were filled by hiring candidates on contract basis in those districts. Though, they rendered vacant as the selected candidates did not turn up for the job. And now, the government had planned to fill the posts through Gujarat Public Service Commission, he added.
It is noteworthy that in February 2013, the Gujarat High Court had initiated suo motu proceedings over the non appointment of Protection Officers resulting in difficulties for women suffering from domestic violence and directed the state government to fill up the posts.
