Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari has given green signal to build two flyovers at Hazira and Ichhapore in Surat at a cost of Rs 190.69 crore, BJP MLA of Choryasi Sandeep Desai said on Friday.

The flyovers will come up on National Highway 53, which connects Surat to Dhulia in Maharashtra, the MLA said.

The decision was made after Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil and the MLA met Gadkari in New Delhi on Thursday and made a request for the same, Desai said.

“Hazira and Ichhapore areas have manufacturing units of several multinational companies such as

L&T, Kribhco, AMNS, Reliance, GAIL, NTPC  and Essar Port and Adani Port. Villages such as Kawas, Mora, Damka, Bhatlai and Rajgari are located on the same road from Dhulia in Maharashtra to Hazira in Surat, along the NH 53. Employees of these industries as well as the containers carrying goods commute on the same roads, creating traffic snarls in the area,” Desai told The Indian Express.

After coming across traffic issues at Kawas Chokdi in Hazira, Desai made a representation to  Patil, highlighting the problems faced by local people.

“I visited the spot where the traffic jams occur periodically and found that the road falls in the jurisdiction of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).”

On Thursday, Desai, along with Patil, met Gadkari and raised the issue.

“Gadkari has given the green signal to build two flyovers near Kawas Chowkdi and Reliance Company Gate in Hazira at a cost of Rs 190.69 crore,” the MLA said.

The tender process for the flyover will begin soon. With the construction of the flyover near Kawas Patiya and Reliance Company Gate, thousands of people of the villages of Hazira area will be benefitted, the MLA said.

“Suvali beach in Hazira is a popular tourist destination. During the Suvali Beach Festival, an estimated two lakh people visit the beach in two-three days. These two flyovers will help reduce traffic snarls on the roads in the area,” the MLA said.
