In a bid to create “menstrual awareness and sanitary waste management”,four product design students from the National Institute of Design (NID) have designed a unique “menstrual kit” — a pocket-friendly Rs 10 sanitary cloth pads and a sanitary waste collection system — for better menstrual awareness among girls. It is a part of their academics.

Krishnaveni Y,Yuhina Lachungpa,Shipra Prasad and Swati Shelar have come up with the menstrual “Sayani kit” that contains a cloth pad, iron and folic acid supplements,an information booklet on periods and small gifts like crayons or chocolates. “When a young girl gets her period,a ‘Sayani kit’ can be gifted to her. This kit will not only help her go through her periods, but also provide her with comfort and information regarding what is happening to her body. Such kits can be provided by the government for adolescent girls who fall under the Kishori Shakti Yojana scheme. The cloth pads can be manufactured by local self-help groups nor NGOs,” Swati Shelar said.

“Only 12 per cent of women in India actually use disposables. Some women also cannot afford underwear,so the cloth pads designed to be worn on underwear are useless to them,” Shelar said. The students designed “cloth pads” made from cotton and felt cloth (a cheaper alternative) which, when used along with a plastic layer on the back, can be made manufactured and made available at Rs 10.

“Since a majority of Indian women use cloth,we wanted to make the experience of using cloth better by making a proper product. We felt that if cloth pads become more comfortable, more people will use it. This way,we can allay the risk of health hazards for rag pickers,” added Shelar.
