Addressing the gathering at the International Exhibition and Convention Centre at Sarsana in Surat,Mukherjee said a big chunk of the countrys young workforce needs to be
converted into a skilled force. Efforts have been made to this end,and by 2022,India should have 50 million-strong skilled workforce,he said.
He observed that the diamond and textile industries have suffered immensely during the recession, but picked up by March 2010,logging exports worth 54.1 per cent and imports of 67.1 per cent. On the Direct Tax Code (DTC) issue,Mukherjee said: I have told the Income Tax department that it is not the real rate of taxes, but an indication. The proposal would be subjected to scrutiny and it is a new code that we would like to have.
