A Muslim youth, who allegedly eloped with a minor Hindu girl, was detained at Vadodara railway station on Thursday.

The duo were on their way to Kasargod in Kerala on the Okha-Ernakulam Express train. The accused, identified as Ajmal Miyan, had allegedly eloped with the minor girl and took her to Surendranagar in Gujarat, and were on their way back to Kerala when they were detained and later handed over to Kerala police on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off from Kasargod police in Kerala that Ajmal Miyan was likely to be travelling on a Kerala-bound train passing through Vadodara along with the minor girl, the police detained three persons and a kid who were travelling in the general compartment of the train when it pulled into Vadodara railway station on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, Kerala police took possession of the accused Ajmal, his mother Fatima Mehboob, the girl and his half-sister (6).

According to an FIR filed at Badiadka police station in Kasargod district, Ajmal had eloped with a 17-year-old girl. He was booked for kidnapping under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was also booked under section 3(1) (II) of the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act, a fax received from the SP of Kasargod district of Kerala showed. Based on the details given in the fax and photographs of the accused and the minor girl, the Vadodara railway police initiated search on Kerala-bound trains.

“We found a burqa-clad woman in a general compartment of Okha-Ernakulam Express. When we questioned her, we found that the woman was the mother of the accused who was travelling along with her and the minor girl,” said Vadodara railway police inspector KD Rathod.

Rathod said that Ajmal worked in Kasargod district as a bus conductor. He reportedly fell in love with the girl, a Class XII student, who lived in Badiadka village in Kasargod district.

The duo eloped to Surendranagar, which is the hometown of the second husband of Fatima Mehboob whom she married 10 years ago after the death of her first husband. Fatima Mehboob had come to her husband’s hometown during Ramzan this year. Four days ago, Ajmal, her son from first marriage, followed her after eloping with the girl. Two days ago, they received a call from the girl’s sister informing her that her mother was ill and wanted her back. They decided to travel back to Kasargod when they were arrested, police said.
