Even as the face-off between 50-odd students of Sculpture and faculty members of MSU’s Fine Arts department continued, students on Saturday accused Dean S K Kushwaha of favouring in-charge/head Aqueel Ahmed, who was asked to step down last week after they complained against his behaviour.

The students alleged that Kushwaha asked them to stop work in the department’s studio till the three-member committee, formed by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, looking into their complaint, submitted its report. The committee will meet the students between Tuesday and Thursday and then submit its report.

“We were working in the studio when the Dean ordered it to be closed, and asked us to stay away from the department until the report was submitted,” a student said.

When contacted,Kushwaha said that he was concerned about the safety of the studio.

“We cannot open the studio until the situation normalises,as there is nobody to look after it. But theory classes will go on,” he said.

The students have now taken their grievance to the cyber space by creating a Facebook page and an online petition which has so far been signed by 100-odd people.

Ahmed was accused of inflicting mental harassment, being partial, and indecent behaviour towards girls. The students also raised questions pertaining to the functioning of the faculty, highlighting “internal cheap politics as well as ill-functioning”.

“The Fine Arts faculty members have a patriarchal mindset that makes women students uncomfortable. Besides, there is a severe faculty crunch which is addressed by temporary and visiting teachers. This is affecting the quality of education,” a student said.
