M S university’s Faculty of Commerce has accepted the recommendation made by state Education Department to implement semester and credit-based system. The faculty will soon form a committee to formulate a plan to this effect.

The new system is expected to be implemented only after the 2011-12 academic year. Faculty dean A R Hingorani said: “We were recommended to implement semester, credit and choice-based system. We are ready to implement the first two systems, but the choice-based one is not feasible till other faculties agree to it.”

He said the central committee will comprise the heads of all departments and other external members to decide on the changes to be made. “Incorporating semester system will also mean increasing the number of subjects, for which department-level committees will be formed.”

Hingorani added that if the semester system is introduced,it would be difficult to entertain more students. The faculty board has decided to fix the minimum cut-off of 45 per cent for local students and 65 per cent for the outside students. However, the final announcement in this regard is yet to be made.
