The Surendrangar district police on Monday lodged four new FIRs against over a dozen farmers for stealing water from Maliya branch of Narmada canal after a team of police and engineers discovered a network of water discharge pipeline spread in three to four kilometres in Malvan village. A total of 30 such FIRs have been lodged in Surendrangar district against 40-odd farmers in a month.

Due to scant rains this season, farmers are finding it difficult to irrigate their crops and therefore the cases of water theft are on the rise, leading to drinking water shortage in urban areas of Saurashtra.
