BJP MLA from Morbi, Kanti Amrutiya, beat up a 24-year-old labourer after the latter created a ruckus allegedly under the influence of alcohol, in Morbi on Monday. A video of the alleged incident started doing rounds on social media by late evening. The MLA later told mediapersons that he had to “act in public interest”.

The labourer was identified as one Jagdish Lokhil, a resident of Arunoday society in Morbi. Police said the incident took place around 11 am in Uma Township, where the MLA lives.

According to sources, Lokhil went on rampage with a sword and beat up security guard of Uma Township. Later, he also clashed with Dilipsinh, personal security guard of the MLA. Hearing the brouhaha, Amrutiya reached the spot and started beating up the labourer. In the 51-second video, the MLA is seen beating the man with a stick.

Incidentally, Amrutiya had stood trial in a murder case, but was acquitted by court a few years ago.

Later, the crowd handed over Lokhil to B division police station of Morbi. The police arrested the labourer after booking him under the Prohibition Act and roaming in public with sword. Police said Lokhil was working as a daily wager in a ceramic factory in Morbi. Further investigation is on.
