Moily set to visit nation’s first shale gas well on Tuesday

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily will visit Gujarat on Tuesday to attend a ceremony of the country’s first shale gas exploratory well.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily will visit Gujarat on Tuesday to attend a “dedication ceremony” of the country’s first shale gas exploratory well being dug in the Cambay Basin by Oil & Natural Gas Corp (ONGC),official sources said.

ONGC has already started drilling the well at Jambusar in Bharuch district after the Cabinet cleared the way for shale gas exploration about a month ago,officials added. This well is part of the company’s Ankleshwar Asset.

During the event,ONGC’s chairperson and managing director Sudhir Vasudeva is scheduled to remain present alongside the Union minister,sources from the company said on Saturday.

Apart from the Cambay Basin in Gujarat,the company which is looking to tap unconventional and alternate sources of energy will also be exploring Krishna-Godavari,Cauvery and Vindhyan sedimentary basins for shale gas in the near future.

These explorations are expected to be carried out in alliance with ConocoPhilips,a US-based oil company that is leader in shale gas and deep-water exploration.

Earlier,ONGC had taken up a pilot project for shale gas exploration in Raniganj,West Bengal and North Karranpura in Jharkhand.
