Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to probe as to who in the Union ministry was responsible for the ban on raw cotton exports.
Modi has appealed to the PM to personally investigate as to what was the urgency for the ban,and whether it was passed with an intent to extend benefits to handful of cotton yarn manufacturers.
The Centre had banned cotton exports on April 19. However, after strong opposition from cotton growing states, the ban was partially lifted and a licensing regime was introduced on May 21. Modi said the decision to introduce a licence system for cotton exports would be detrimental for the exports, and cotton farmers in the state.
