Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the work to cover sub- and branch-canals network of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project (spread over one lakh kilometres) with solar panels will start soon.

“A team of experts was called and asked to assess the feasibility of covering the canals with solar panels. The research work on the project has almost got over and work is likely to begin soon,” Modi said.

Solar power generation faces impediments of land shortage,so the government has come up with this solution.

“The main canal is so big that we cannot do anything over it and the minor canals are so small that we cannot do much on them too. But sub- and branch-canals can be used,” he said.

“The experiment to cover the canals with solar panels (for power generation) is proving to be a success.

Initial estimate shows that by covering one km of canals by solar panels, one megawatt of energy can be generated,” he said.

Modi was speaking at the function to launch Indian Fund for Sustainable Energy (INFUSE) at Indian Institute of Management,Ahmedabad, here.

“Not only this, simultaneously through this process, one crore litres of water can be saved from evaporation annually. The panels will also serve as a safety cover for the canals,” he said.

“Since most of the canal network passes through villages,it won’t be difficult for me to energise them and there wouldn’t be any line-losses as such,” Modi said, referring to promotion of disintegrated model of solar power supply in Gujarat to cut the distribution losses.

“I was not satisfied with this. I have asked experts to examine the possibility of hanging micro-hydro turbines from the infrastructure of solar panels over the canals,” Modi said.

“So while water flows through the canal, energy can also be generated (by turbines) as well, apart from whatever would be generated through the solar panels,” he said.
