The Mahagujarat Janata Party (MJP),a breakaway faction of the BJP,has fielded its candidates in the elections to the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) slated for April 19.
Gandhinagar MJP president M R Patel said they have fielded 10 candidates,including four women,from seven wards.
Gandhinagar was given the status of a municipal corporation after a Gujarat High Court ruling in April 2010 on a petition filed by an NGO. This is the first elections for GMC since then. Gandhinagar has a total electorates of 1.35 lakh though its population,according to the latest data,is 2.92 lakh.
Led by former minister of state for home Gordhan Zadaphia,the party has in the past contested Assembly as well as Lok Sabha elections but failed to open its account there. It also contested the October 2010 elections in six municipal corporations but could not win even a single seat.
