Bhavnagar Mayor Suresh Dhandhaliya on Thursday agreed to hold a public debate between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited officials and the groups opposing the proposed atomic power plant at Mithi Virdi village in the district.
Proposed to be India’s largest nuclear power plant (6,900 MW) to be built under the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the project has met with strong opposition from locals as well as from Bhavnagar city residents over possible threats to their safety and livelihood from the plant.
“Nuclear power plant is a necessary. But concerns of locals are also important. There should be a debate over this,” said Dhandhaliya while inaugurating a science exhibition in Bhavnagar. “The date for same (public debate) will be finalised later,” he added.
This is for the first time after the plant site was finalised four years ago that a proposal for such a debate has come from a political platform.
The BJP mayor was invited to inaugurate the exhibition at the Blawant Rai Science Centre where both NPCIL and Mithi Virdi villagers had put up stalls.
