About 45 Congress MLAs were Tuesday suspended from the Gujarat Assembly for a session following their rushing to the Well of the House and constant raising of slogans in connection with a personal verbal clash between Congress MLA from Dehgam Kaminiba Rathod and Cabinet Minister Nitin Patel.
Following the suspension, other Congress MLAs who were sitting on their seats staged a walkout.
Congress MLA Kamini Rathod of Dehgam constituency, while speaking on the motion of thanks on Governor’s address, alleged that BJP government in the state had incurred “unnecessary” expenditure by organising DGPs and IGs meet in Dhordo of Rann of Kutch in which PM Narendra Modi was present. She said that there was no constructive outcome of the meet. However, the Health Minister intervened and told her that it was an issue related to the security of the country and being a first time MLA, she should be careful while talking on such issues. Rathod retorted and asked whether the senior BJP leader has taken a “supari” (contract) to silence the voice of women members of the Opposition, as he was not allowing them to express their views.
The minister then said that if he exposed what was going on in her constituency and her house, she would not even come to the Assembly. Terming the minister’s statements against their woman MLA a “threat”, Congress MLAs started shouting slogans and came to the Well of the House. Amid the ruckus, Deputy Speaker Atmaram Parmar adjourned the House for 20 minutes. However, Congress members continued protest when the session resumed and many of them rushed towards the Well of the House following which the Speaker suspended them. Later, Leader of Opposition Shankersinh Vagh-ela, who was not suspended, staged a walkout in protest, along with other members.
The morning session concluded with the passing of the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address to the Assembly in the absence of the Opposition. In the Second Session of the House, Speaker Ganpat Vasava said that during the break he had held a meeting with Rathod, Patel and Chief whips of the two parties and following that the two members had assured to withdraw their statements.
