An assistant programme officer of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) has been arrested in connection with financial irregularities in three gram panchayats in the tribal district of Dangs,police sources said Thursday.
Amit Krushude was arrested from his house in Ahwa,police said. So far,nine people have been arrested after a complaint was filed a fortnight ago about financial irregularities worth Rs 71 lakh.
All those arrested at present in judicial custody in Ahwa jail.
Recently,a CAG report on MGNREGS had underlined the presence of ghost workers,delay in payment of wages and lack of “efficient” grievance redress mechanism for MGNREGS in Gujarat. The report had also pointed out that “boribunds” worth over Rs 100 crore existed only on paper.
The case in Dangs came to light after District Development Officer (DDO) Rajesh Manju initiated an inquiry,which subsequently found that in several cases,work was done only on paper even as wages were distributed to beneficiaries. It also found that the local post master,sarpanchs,taluka development officers and others were involved in this fraud.
Later,a complaint was lodged at Ahwa police station.
Police sub-inspector R V Thakore,who is the investigating officer in the case,said payments were also given to people who are dead.
