The Gujarat State Branch (GSB) of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has demanded scrapping of the proposed Gujarat Medical Health Act. Opposing it tooth and nail, the IMA has said that enactment of the proposed legislation will force doctors to live under a reign of terror leading to deterioration of medical services.
A meeting of all the 115 branches of the GSB held at the IMA Hall on Ashram Road on Sunday resolved to form a committee to deal with the situation, said Dr M R Kanani, president of GSB-IMA,adding that over 225 doctors took part in the meeting.
Describing the proposed heath committees as nothing short of parallel court, doctors said the government now wanted even to decide for doctors where they should set up their clinics. They said provisions like compulsory consent of a government doctor before a private doctor shifts a patient to a government hospital is not a good idea.
A major feeling among the doctors was that the IMA should have been consulted before the government came up with the proposed legislation. The proposed legislation must be rational and corruption-free,while in its present form,it is fraught with chances of encouraging inspector raj, corruption and harassment of doctors. The doctors have decided to submit memorandum opposing the proposed legislation to all district collectors.
