After living for 11 years illegally in the United States,an Amreli-based 52-year-old man landed back at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Monday morning with an emergency certificate (EC),a one-way travel document issued by the Indian embassy in case of loss of passport.
The man, identified as Devdas Ranchodbhai Chanchad, reportedly decided to return home after being diagnosed with cancer.
According to a case lodged by immigration officials at the Sardarnagar police station,Devdas, who hails from Savarkundla in Amreli district,is at present staying at Vadaj in Ahmedabad.
Devdas went to the US via Canada in 2001 aboard a flight from Mumbai with a bogus passport. He lived in the US,working in restaurants and other places as labourer. A few years ago,his his health started deteriorating and he was subsequently diagnosed with cancer. He claims since he couldnt afford treatment in the US,he approached the Indian Embassy and got the EC, said the police.
Devdas is not the lone such case.
Last month, two men,59-year-old Varva Purushottam Patel from Mehsana and 52-year-old Popat Patel from Kalol in Gandhinagar, had similarly arrived with EC. They too were illegal immigrants who decided to return home after they developed health complications.
In another case,a man from Rajasthan was deported from Johannesburg after his work permit was found to be forged.
