A man was arrested for allegedly killing his two young daughters by setting them on fire in Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad on Thursday,police said.
The Meghainagar police said that the incident happened near IG compound area where the family lives in shanties. The man had four daughters and a boy. The victims were identified as Punam (5) and Neha (7).
The accused,identified as Govind Rathod,is an autorickshaw driver by profession,police said.
The incident happened at around 3:30 pm when the two girls had returned home from school. The neighbour alerted the police about the incident and they were rushed to the civil hospital,but doctors declared them brought dead.
Meghaninagar Police Inspector D H Desai said,The accused had a fight with his wife and set his two children on fire by pouring kerosene on them during the fight. We cannot ascertain the reason right now,but the neighbours and family have also complained that the man is mentally upset and also an alcoholic.
DCP Zone IV A M Muniya said,It is too early to ascertain what is the reason but we suspect the man was upset for having four daughters and after that a son. However we will probe the case from all angles and see if there was any other reasons behind it.
The victims mother Indu lodged an FIR against her husband for killing her daughters. The police have booked him for murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and begun a thorough probe.
