Saurastra Jal Dhara Trust,a Surat-based charitable trust working for conservation of water, will organise a maha yagna in the dry bed of Bhadar dam, around 60 km south of Rajkot city in Gondal taluka on Sunday to pressure the government to implement Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation (SAUNI) project expeditiously and promote water conservation activities in the region. Ironically, president of the trust Mathur Savani claimed that Chief Minister Narendra Modi and many other ministers are likely to attend the programme.
Volunteers of the trust have started collecting edible oil and vermillion from 4,800 villages in eight districts of Saurashtra for the yagna. While vermillion will be applied to a huge statue of Lord Hanuman, the oil will be used to prepare prasad. There will be 115 yagna kunds each named after major dams of the region. Thousands of couples would perform the rituals of giving aahuti (sacrifice) in these kunds as part of the yanga.
While giving aahuti, they will chant mantra and pray to God to give decision-makers the power to install gates on Narmdada dam early, complete SAUNI project in a time-bound manner and start work on Kalpasar project, Savani said. The Rs 10,000-crore SAUNI project was announced by Modi in last September to fill up 115 dams of Saurashtra with Narmada water by interlinking 87 rivers of the region.
