Low wage: 500 days on,mid-day meal scheme workers end fast

More than 500 days after they went on a fast demanding better wages and status of permanent employees,hundreds of workers of the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Scheme ended their protest on Sunday in Gandhinagar in the presence of Gujarat Congress in-charge Mohan Prakash.

“The state government did not pay heed to our demands although we had been protesting for the past

504 days. Now,the Congress has promised that the Centre will increase its grant for the MDM Scheme and that the employees would get Rs 4,500 per month at par with the Anganwadi workers,” said Chandansinh Vaghela,president of Gujarat Rajya Madhyahan Bhojan Yojana Karmachari Mahamandal,the union of MDM scheme workers.

“The Congress has also promised that once it comes to power,it would consider our demand for the status of permanent employee of the state government. Following this promise,we ended our protest and symbolic fasts,” he added.
