After a dramatic chase,a liquor-laden truck that sped off carrying with a constable who had boarded it to check the consignment rammed a police van and fell into a canal near Vapi.
While the truck driver managed to escape, the constable suffered multiple rib fractures and injuries on his head. He was rushed to a hospital where he is said to be out of danger.
It all began when the truck, bound for Gujarat and coming from union territory of Daman, was intercepted at a police checkpost in Vapi early Tuesday.
While some policemen were talking to the driver of the truck (GJ-15-XX-5387),a constable,Mahesh Thakore, climbed into it to check the packed cartons. Sensing trouble, the truck driver simply sped away.
A Quick Response Team (QRT) of Valsad district police, which was deployed at Vapi Chhala road as part of security measures for Holi festival, started chasing the truck and also sent out an alert.
On Dungra road in Vapi,a police van was parked in the middle of the road to intercept the truck. After a chase of nearly two kilometres, the truck driver hit the van on the road and lost control. The truck hit a tree and fell into a canal nearby.
While the driver escaped, the police constable received multiple injuries on the head and ribs, mainly because of the crushed liquor bottles. He was rushed to a hospital in Vapi.
Vapi town police inspector R I Desai said the truck was later lifted with a crane but its registration number had turned out to be fake. The chassis and engine number were also found to be tampered with.
