Liquor raid: Modhwadia releases audio tape, alleges sub-inspector demanded bribe

Following the allegation, the woman sub-inspector, who was attached with Satellite police sation, has been transferred to the city police headquarters.

A day after Arjun Modhwadia’s son and 24 others were held for allegedly consuming alcohol during a party, the former state Congress chief on Monday released an audio clip in which, he claimed, the sub-inspector who led the raid was heard demanding a bribe of Rs 11 lakh to go soft on the accused.

Following the allegation, the woman sub-inspector, who was attached with Satellite police sation, has been transferred to the city police headquarters. The investigation has also been handed over to the crime branch.

Playing the four-minute audio clip of a conversation between a man and a woman on his cellphone before mediapersons, Modhwadia alleged, “The woman sub-inspector, C B Jadeja, from Satellite police station had demanded a bribe of Rs 11 lakh, of which Rs 4 lakh was paid on the night of the incident.”

Police had raided Asavari Apartments in Satellite area of the city past Saturday midnight, and allegedly found that liquor was being served in the party.

“It was not a liquor party… It was birthday celebrations of a relative of my son’s friend Varun Jain… The liquor consignment seized from the spot belongs to Varun’s father, who is a liquor permit holder,” the Congress leader claimed.

Demanding a probe by the Anti-Corruption Bureau, he said, “It should be probed as to who gave permission to the sub-inspector to raid the house at the midnight.” He said the police cannot search a house without a warrant or without permission from higher authorities.

“Blood samples of all the suspects should be sent outside the state for forensic tests,” he said. Modhwadia alleged that the audio clip revealed the “modus operandi” of the Gujarat police, who “pay a cut” to special informers after they extort money from those who violate the prohibition law.

About his son’s alleged involvement in the case, the Congress leader said, “Nobody in our family consumes alcohol. I and my family members have been leading prohibition campaigns for the last many years at our home town in Porbandar. I have decided to go public about this incident, because I am confident that my son did not consume alcohol.”

Vidhi Chaudhari, DCP, Zone-7, said, “We will definitely take action against the sub-inspector. She has already been transferred to the city police headquarters, and the investigations has been handed over to the crime branch where an ACP will head the probe.” Jadeja could not be reached for comment.
