In a bid to ensure that they do not look intimidating to the public, hundreds of policemen below the rank of deputy superintendent of police guarded the venue of Sadbhavana Mission fast in plain clothes here on Sunday.
The policemen were deployed at the Vanita Vishram grounds where Chief Minister Narendra Modi was on his second in the series of fasts in the cities. There was a heavy cordon of khaki clad cops outside the venue who checked every visitor and put them through the security drill.
Policing was all corporate style and very tacit. We were told by our bosses to wear white shirt and black trouser if we were posted inside the venue. The order was oral and since almost everyone has a white shirt and black pant,we had no problem obliging, a police inspector at the venue told The Indian Express.
Surat Commissioner of Police Rakesh Asthana said,We have taken this step for the first time… They (police personnel) should look smart. With this, cops can keep a watch on public by mixing with them and catch the notorious elements.
The Gujarat Police has reportedly been experimenting with such plain cloth policing since the cricket ODI played at the Motera stadium in Ahmedabad on December 5. This is now being done on a regular basis at Sadbhavana fast venues where we have three layers of security. Although there are no orders for any particular dress code for those on Sadbhavana duty,it is possible that locally the police personnel may have been told to wear black (trouser) and white (shirt) to tell them apart.
