State Cong harps on ‘Modi misrule’
Party’s poll literature says CM ‘killed’ small industries, misled people about development

Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have attacked BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani at the time of the release of the party’s election manifesto on Tuesday. But in Gujarat, the state unit of the Congress is carefully targeting Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The election literature prepared by the state unit suggests that this will be the Congress’s strategy in Gujarat. In the party’s election material,Modi is attacked with charges of corruption and on account of misleading people on development issues.

He is also accused of “killing” the small and medium-scale industries in the state. A handbill of the party titled, “Misleading propaganda of the BJP government” says the government is not bothered while small scale industries are dying a slow death in the state. Of the 3 lakh medium-scale industries,75,000 had closed down in the last one year,it says.

The handbills attack Modi for doing nothing to bail out the closing industries and for his failure to do anything for the 10 lakh people who have lost their jobs in the state in the last one year owing to the economic slowdown.

It also accuses the Modi government of hijacking the central projects including the 108 emergency services and construction of flyovers in Surat,Vadodara and Ahmedabad. While these projects were done by taking central assistance,Modi took the credit for the same,it says.

Describing the claims of signing of 8,555 MoUs at the Vibrant Gujarat summits a symbol of corruption, another handbill titled “BJP government, corrupt government,” calls the Modi government “anti-employee” and “anti-farmer.” It says the government has not properly implemented the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Panel and has deprived the small and marginal farmers of stamp duty benefits.

Modi is also accused of offering loans worth Rs 9,790 crore at 0.1 per cent interest to the Tata Group for the Nano car project, besides giving VAT exemption for personal publicity. The state government decided to offer almost free electricity to Tata’s car project, but collected Rs 18,000 crore from the middle class in the last one year by raising power tariff on them,it says.

The bills describe the Modi government as “one sans any humanity,” adding that while diamond workers are committing suicide, the government is holding functions to glorify Modi. In the last seven years, the government has spent crores of rupees from the public treasury on organising as many as 71 functions to promote the personal image of the chief minister,it says.

The party has also criticised the Modi government for not taking concrete step against Asaram Bapu following the mysterious deaths of two gurukul students.
