A special CBI Sessions Court Friday sent IPS officer G L Singhal and retired deputy superintendent of police J G Parmar to six days custody of the CBI in connection with the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Special CBI Judge Gita Gopi passed the order while acting on the probe agency’s revision application seeking the duo’s remand.
Earlier,a CBI magisterial court had rejected CBI’s applications for both Singhal and Parmar on the ground that the remand applications did not contain any reasonable ground on which the custody could be granted.
Advocate Sanjay Thakkar,who represented Parmar before the court,said the court has granted CBI the two’s custody till 3 pm of March 6. Thakkar said the court has allowed the application mainly on the grounds that the offence is of very serious nature and that CBI did not have enough opportunity to interrogate them after their arrest.
In its arguments before the court,CBI had contended that the two accused were on the spot of offence at the relevant time. Also,Singhal was the senior most officer at the spot who gave order of firing.
Parmar,who was the police inspector at the relevant time,had fired four rounds from his official weapon. CBI had contended that the bullets of the 9 mm pistol of the police officers are not matching with the bullets recovered from the bodies of the four deceased. The probe agency had demanded custody of the two to recover incriminating material related to the alleged crime.
