‘Iron men’ join ceremony

The foundation stone laying ceremony for building the 182-metre-tall Statue of Unity saw the presence of some 30 volunteers of the Citizens for Accountable Governance in blue uniforms. The voluntary organisation has joined hands with the state government to collect iron tools from various parts of the country. For the volunteers, who were mainly students, this was probably their first public presence. However, despite repeated attempts, the volunteers refused to talk about their role in the project. Giving details about the state government’s plans for building the statue with help of these volunteers,Joint Managing Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited K Srinivas said that the organisation with the help of government would mobilise the process of iron collections from the farmers. Citizens for Accountable Governance has recently launched a website for online shopping of T-shirts with slogans prompting youth to vote and be part of the change.
