The Gujarat IPS Association,which met Friday after two years,elected Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana as its president.
It also discussed the security of families of police officers who are lodged in jails in connection with various encounter cases.
In a departure from tradition,the Associations president and 10 other office-bearers were elected through elections.
Asthana,an additional DGP,is fifth in Gujarat Police hierarchy.
The last president was former DGP Deepak Swaroop,who retired a few months ago. The last meeting of the Association was in October 2011.
Asthana was elected unopposed. He is among those officers who is believed to be in race for the Ahmedabad Police Commissioners post after S K Saikia retires in October this year.
The IPS officers also decided to donate their one-day salary to victims of floods in Uttarakhand.
The new members of the Association include ADGP (admin) A K Singh as vice-president and DIG (intelligence) J K Bhatt as secretary. The executive members are joint director of Anti-Corruption Bureau G S Malik,DIG (coastal security and intelligence) Anupamsingh Gehlot. The SP-level officers in the body are Himanshu Shukla,Nipuna Toravane,Gagandeep Gambhir and R V Asari.
The Association also discussed issues of police reforms and salary,holidays and transfer.
